Magnet Verify SaaS version - April 21, 2025

SaaS version as of April 21, 2025

  • Enhancements:
    • Magnet Verify users can review the Reference Library Inventory and determine whether Verify has image or video exemplars for any device or last generation. The data is now displayed in a grid with color coded markers that alert the user whether Verify has low (yellow circle = less than 10 exemplars) or high (green circle = 10 or more exemplars) coverage for a given format (e.g., .mp4, .mov, .jpg, etc.) for a given device or last generation. This grid continues to be dynamically updated each time the reference library is updated in the product, and it is searchable/filterable by device or last generation name. -MET-4
    • Magnet Verify users can access the Magnet Idea Portal for Verify via a link directly in the product interface. Users will see a new banner that alerts them to the presence of the Idea Portal and provides a link that allows them to navigate in a separate tab to the portal to provide ideas for the product. -MET-101
    • Magnet Verify users can access an updated version of the Magnet Verify User Guide. -MET-100
    • Updates to the Verify parsers to support Nikon Maker Notes parsing in Nikon image files. This addition opens access to proprietary metadata for Nikon files and significantly improves the JPEG signature patterns for Nikon-created JPEGs. -MET-92
  • Bug Fixes:
    • Inconsistent handling of filenames throughout the product when double-byte characters are present has been corrected in reports and results in the UI and in PDF report outputs. -MET-78
    • Legacy references to “Medex” instead of “Verify” were removed from the product where they could be found. -MET-89
    • Users who do not have permission to create Projects will not even be able to submit a project creation form. Previously the user could initiate the form, but was not allowed to submit the project. Now the user will be blocked from initiating the form as well. -MET-95

Magnet Verify SaaS version - March 20, 2025

SaaS version

  • Enhancements:
    • Magnet Verify users can view a new data point called “Signature Category” in file-level result sets. This data point represents an effort to group the Verify Reference Library signatures into categories that describe at a high level how files that match a particular signature were created. Categories include, Camera Original, File Editing Application, Generative AI / Deepfake, IP Camera System / VMS / DVR / NVR / CCTV, Media Management Application, Mobile Application, Mobile Device (Application Processed or Camera Original), Screen Recorder, Social Media, Transmission / Acquisition App, Website, or Undetermined. If a signature has not been categorized, then the output will report Uncategorized. -MET-63
    • Magnet Verify users can download a zip file of PDF reports for all files processed in a given project. All individual reports are named according to the filename for they file they represent, and the zip file is named according to the project identifier. -MET-73
    • Magnet Verify users can process M4A audio files successfully. Note: There will be limited Reference Library matches for M4A audio files while we begin to grow our M4A exemplars. – MET-72
    • Updates to the Magnet Verify parsers to support SEFT/SEFH parsing in Samsung files. This addition opens access to proprietary metadata for Samsung files and significantly improves the JPEG signature patterns for Samsung-created JPEGs. -MET-21

Medex becomes Magnet Verify - 09/12/24

Medex is now Magnet Verify:

We are excited to announce that Medex, your trusted solution for authenticating media and countering manipulated content, is now officially part of the Magnet Forensics family!

As we continue to grow and evolve, we are pleased to share that Medex will now be known as Magnet Verify. You’ll notice a graphical change in the user interface when you next log in to the Verify (previously Medex) product, but all functionality remains the same.

SaaS Users: You can continue to access the platform at app.medexforensics.com. We will alert you when the URL changes (there will also be a redirect at that time).

Desktop Users: You can access new application downloads and new reference library downloads at the Magnet Support Portal. You should have received emails about that transition. Your existing dongle will continue to support your access to the software. Please be in touch if you experience any issues.

    Medex Desktop Version 1.0.5 Update - 23/04/24

    Includes the following updates:

    • Datetime-based tests
      • Over the years we have noticed a consistent behavior with Apple embedded dates that provides a signal whether the file is the original file created on the device, or whether the file is a successor to the original for one reason or another. We have added dynamic tests that focus on these datetime values and reports on them when they are of significance in the automated analysis results within the Medex Insights area.
    • Generational History simplification
      • You’ll notice that we have simplified the data we report for Last Generation results in the Structural Analysis area of the platform. You will now see a distinct list of Last Generations that we are matches structurally to the file being analyzed.
    • Updated Parsers
      • We are always improving our forensic file format parsers to ensure you have comprehensive and transparent results. This fix includes support for Apple-specific data fields so that they do not interrupt the parsers’ efforts to find all valid boxes in a file.

Log in to the Medex Portal website to get the latest application download. Download the desired version of the Medex Desktop application and install it on your Windows machine of choice to run Medex locally (Reminder: A dongle is required for the application to run). While you’re there you can also make sure you have the latest Reference Library version.

    Medex Update - 31/08/23

After an incubation period, we are releasing a significant frontend update to the Medex Video Authentication Platform.

Here’s a short explainer video to see the changes in action.

This release will includes the following.

Significant transformation of the File Examination Result page:

    • The option to request Advanced Analysis has been relocated to the “Action” dropdown menu on the File Examination Result page.
    • The option to explore the internal structure of the file has been relocated to the “Action” dropdown menu on the File Examination Result page.
    • The file’s name and the date and time of the examination are now elegantly displayed as a prominent header on the File Examination Result page.
    • To enhance user experience, we have relocated the File Summary section to the top right of the File Examination Result page. In order to streamline the page and reduce clutter, the data in this section is initially hidden but can be easily revealed by simply clicking the chevron located in the top right corner of the section.
    • To declutter the page and create a seamless user experience, we have relocated the user Comments section to the top right of the File Examination Result page, just beneath the File Summary section. In order to maintain a clean interface, the data in this section is initially concealed, but can be easily revealed with a simple click on the chevron located in the top right corner of the section.
    • The Structural Analysis section on the left side of the File Examination Result page now houses the Structural Signature section, accompanied by a “View Signature” button that allows users to easily access and view the file’s structural signature.
    • The Medex Classifier section has been renamed the Attribute Similarity Analysis section.
    • The Proprietary Structural Data and Unknown Structural Data sections now appear in the left column of the File Examination Result page just under the Attribute Similarity Analysis section.
    • The File Metadata section has been renamed Decoded Metadata and has been moved to the right column of the File Examination Result page.
    • The new beta Medex Insights section is now displayed at the top of the left column of the File Examination Result page.

    New Product Behaviors:

    • The Project Summary page now features auto-refresh. No longer will you need to refresh the page manually while you await results for your file analyses. The page will auto-refresh every thirty seconds until all files in the project have been completely processed.
    • We have eliminated the concept of a “Partial Match.” Previously, this match was based on a limited structural signature to identify file relationships when a full structural signature match was not found. However, in order to enhance user experience and reduce unnecessary information, we have decided to remove it. Now, you will only see reports of “Full Match” or “No Match” in the Structural Analysis section of the system.
    • We are excited to announce the addition of new columns on the Project Summary page, providing you with more useful and accurate data to compare files within your project.
      • Match: If we made a full signature match to the structural signature of your file, then you will see a green check mark in this column. If we did not make a match, then there will be no green check mark in this column.
      • Signature: If we made a full signature match to the structural signature of your file, then you will see the Medex Reference Library identifier for the signature in this column, e.g., “rl.881.” If we did not make a match, then you will see a Project File identifier for the signature in this column, e.g., “pf.1234.” This identifier is still a unique identifier for the signature, so you can use it to group files together based on their signatures within the Project Summary table.
      • Brand: If we made a full signature match to the structural signature of your file, and if we have only seen one distinct Brand generate that signature in our Reference Library, then we will display the brand here. If we have seen more than one Brand generate that signature, then we will display Multiple here. If we did not make a match to the structural signature of your file, then we will not display any value here.
      • Model: If we made a full signature match to the structural signature of your file, and if we have only seen one distinct Model generate that signature in our Reference Library, then we will display the model here. If we have seen more than one Model generate that signature, then we will display Multiple here. If we did not make a match to the structural signature of your file, then we will not display any value here.
      • Last Generation: If we made a full signature match to the structural signature of your file, and if we have only seen one distinct Last Generation generate that signature in our Reference Library, then we will display the generation name here. If we have seen more than one generation generate that signature, then we will display Multiple here. If we did not make a match to the structural signature of your file, then we will not display any value here.
      • Structural Consistency: If we did not detect any inconsistencies in the binary structure of your file, then we will display a green check mark here. If we found anything out of the ordinary in terms of the binary structure of your file, then we will display a red warning triangle here.
      • Status: Indicates the status of processing your file, e.g., Processing, Complete, Error.
    • As an official contributing member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), we have introduced the ability for Medex to recognize and validate C2PA manifests if they are present in a video file. Medex will display a box alerting you to the presence of a C2PA manifest. If present, Medex will attempt to validate the manifest and will report whether it is valid or invalid. Medex will also allow you to view the embedded JSON of the manifest to review the data present within it. Learn more about the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA).
    • Introducing our groundbreaking feature – Medex Insights! Get ready to unlock a whole new level of analysis with our automated logic that highlights the key attributes and features of your file. From originality and brands to models and last generations, we’ve got you covered. This beta section is designed to test its effectiveness, so we value your feedback. Let us know if Medex Insights are helpful by responding to the prompt within the section.
